    Yeah once you have the kanas down, then time for some vocab! For the first few years I found it worked really well to focus on vocab out of class, and learn grammar in class (and then re-read the textbook every now and then, especially parts you have problems with).
    Usually Genki was a pretty good text, but it still had some issues. Probably a new ED by now though. :P

    Oh right I remember hearing that they started offering that. Still, there are lots of different Genki decks on Anki, and I think the Anki system is just so helpful if you give it 10 min a day or so. :)


    I got way ahead of my class in terms of vocab, anyways.

    I have to admit, I still have trouble with particles sometimes. Especially throws me off when I'm not sure if I need two or not.

    Once you know the basics, writing them becomes pretty straight-forward.

    For a quick crash course: in general start at the top right and work your way horizontally across, horizontal strokes first, vertical strokes after, and then there are some kinds of strokes that always go at the end.
    There are lots of little bits that get re-used a lot, and tend to shape the meaning of the kanji, so once you start to remember some of those it gets easier, but is still obviously a large undertaking. :)

    It helped me learn a few hundred words pretty well, and is really helpful with Kanji too :)

    Anki is a free flashcard system that shows you cards in a "smart" manner. Basically it tries to learn which cards you are good at and which you are not. You can get it on Android devices or a computer. You do them every day and it adds some amount of new cards a day that your specify, and I found it works really well!
    You can make your own deck of cards, or look at other decks people have made if they are good enough (they often are pretty well made).
