Hey peeps.

I'm normally not one for talking or up for discussion in stuff I don't really like, but I've had a nagging thought lately and felt like it would be appropriate to ask here.

Do you like the same genres in anime as you in live action shows / movies? (Friends, How I met your mother, Suits, Law & Order, etc.). You get what I mean.

Personally, I don't watch a lot of live action stuff because I'm pretty much obsessed with anime, but I do watch on occasion.

What I like about Live Action:

Pretty much all genres, except a couple.

What I Don't like about Live Action:

Horror, (Still have nightmares about Paranormal Activity, and the Japanese version of Grudge).

What I like about Anime:

I love all genres when it comes to anime, I actually LOVE horror, which is weird.

What about you?

Apologies for any error(s) in my spelling.

Regards, Puxli.

Yeah I do. Almost all of it actually.

Except the live action ones you listed I didn't watch yet. Also suits? What is that one?

It's a series about lawyers from 2011 with an IMDB rating of 8.4. I've only watched a few episodes so far but the main cast is very likeable and I'm enjoying it. Though, I've heard that it suddenly drops a bit after season 1.

Let me confirm something. By "live-action" you mean Hollywood adaptation of a particular anime series, or just movies?
  • The Hollywood adaptation of Battle Angel Alita is not bad.
  • Edge of Tomorrow is a loose adaptation of "All You Need Is Kill" by Hiroshi Sakurazaka and Yoshitoshi Abe (too many artistic liberties though, not a very faithful adaptation)
  • Rurouni Kenshin had a somewhat decent live-adaptation trilogy
  • etc.
Japanese anime and Western movies are intertwined in more ways than you thought. For example, nearly the entire fantasy genre of anime and JPRGs out there, are inspired by Tolkien's works. Many Western cyberpunk is inspired by Ghost in the Shell, etc. For games, you might've already heard that Dark Souls and Elden Ring is inspired by Berserk.

But to answer what I assumed to be your primary question, the answer is... yes. I love mystery, suspense, and crime thrillers. Be it anime or movies (consumes more Eastern medias though). For example:

Anime / manga / LN:
Boogiepop Phantom, Serial Experiments Lain, Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni, Psycho -Pass. The recent Summertime Rendering is not bad too.

Favorite manga / LN authors:
  • Kei Sanbe (Boku dake ga Inai Machi, Mizutamari ni Ukabu Shima)
  • Ryougo Narita (Baccano!, Durarara!!, Dead Mount Death Play)
  • Urasawa Naoki (Monster, Pluto)
  • Shuuzou Oshimi (Flowers of Evil, Blood on the Tracks)
Movies:
Silence of the Lambs, Minority Report, Black Swan, Alfred Hitchcock's works, Stephen King's works, etc.

I'm also a fan of Youtube channels such as Dark Curiosities, Dark Science, Lemmino, etc. I love being kept in the dark and being put on the edge of my seat.

I dunno if it's up your alley or not, but I reccommend anime called Another (adapted by P.A. Works) or Mononoke (adapted by Toei Animation) for you. Have you checked out the recent "Dark Gathering" too?

Speaking of horror, Ju-On and Shutter (2004 horror made in Thailand) is pretty good. I say the original Paranormal Activity and Blair Witch Project isn't too bad. It's always the bad sequels that ruined the franchise.

I just call everything that isn't anime "live action", I wrote a few examples in the thread. I appreciate your in-depth answer though.

I will definitely check out those YouTube channels, but I usually find myself stuck in that wormhole and can watch random stuff for hours, lol.

I've already watched Another, Mononoke as well as Dark Gathering, I loved them all. As for Dark Gathering, I really didn't like the male MC, I mean.. I get how seeing all these "ghosts" can be scary, but his voice is just 'too whiny'. Not sure how it is in the English dub (if there is one), but I prefer watching in Japanese.

Oh yeah, I forgot about Blair Witch, that one gave me a hard time walking close to woods / areas with lots of trees at night, haha.

Sorry for the longwinded answer. I tend to answer in detail to prevent misunderstanding nor misconception, borne out of ambiguity. Depending on the person, it might be desirable / undesirable.
