Perhaps my first, and still favorite anime is Sailor Moon! Something about the series made me realize, for the first time, the difference between anime and cartoons. I could see that cartoons were cute vignettes, usually humor based, while anime actually seeks to tell a cohesive story over a period of time. They are also quite different, visually.

Most of the best anime is produced in Japan. This means, that to see it in a non-Japanese speaking country, a translation is usually needed.

Translations are made by dubbing or subtitling the anime.

Which do you generally prefer for the anime you watch?

I ask, because of animes like Sailor Moon, which are in both dubbed and subbed versions.

When I first saw Sailor Moon, I watched the original dubbed and censored version shown in America. I didn't know different, until I found that there were lots more episodes than were telecast in the States.

The original dubbed version was heavily censored and Americanized; it was really dummed down to just a kids' show. Watching the original episodes uncensored and subbed, revealed a marvelous depth to a great, and more mature series.

I won't watch the Old Sailor Moon dubs, I much prefer the subbed version.

Same is true for Deadman Wonderland. There are subtle differences in the dubbed and subbed versions, and I prefer the subs.

By that same token, I prefer the dubbed versions of animes like Corpse Princess and The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. They are quite good, and I don't see any obvious signs of Americanized censorship.

So, what do you think? Are dubbed or subbed anime better? Which do you prefer? Or should we take things on a case by case basis?

a poll here would be nice~

if the voice and actors really go with the characters, the dubs are good~
most of the time I go with subs though because of quality or file size.

A poll sounds like a good idea, I've added one!

Thanks!

I like both.... To lazy to read the sub.... I can always watch it in dubbed.... If dubbed suck then subbed is the way to go.... It a win/win for me.... :D

I hear rather on original language the anime....

Theres another thread thats the exact same thing ;p But anyhow i prefer subs usually~

I always, 100% of the time prefer subs.

I just prefer to watch foreign media (be it animation, films, television, whatever) in whatever its original language is. I feel that's the "purest" way to watch something and see it exactly as the creators intended.
