I think my CPU fan is getting a serious hiccup.

For a while lately, my CPU fan has been making this loud, fluctuating noise when the PC is on. It doesn't matter if it's processing something or not, if it's on it'll make that noise. Occasionally, it will also run very smoothly with almost no sound coming from it.

But yesterday, it finally died.

My PC wasn't even able to get to the BIOS screen. I consulted my technician and he said that I need to replace the whole CPU since the fan and the CPU itself is a whole one thing. He also said that I can fix it by giving the fan some oil, but it won't last long.

I can't possibly afford a new CPU since my dad is saving up to buy me a high-end laptop for my college, so... do any of you know an affordable method to fix a CPU fan? My house's been a hell since my PC died, so any help would be appreciated...! :D

Hey Neo-Exile,

First I would like to point out that your technician may be really wrong - you can replace your CPU heatsink as long as it's compatible with the CPU socket which you are using - do you know which motherboard you are using? I could help you find a replacement heatsink and fan for ridiculously good prices and ridiculously good performance; unless your technician is right, of course, which I doubt, however.

I think what he is trying to say is that you will need to get a new CPU if you don't wanna risk a bit of your hardware and getting your hands a bit dirty, because when you replace the CPU heatsink, you may want to clean the surface of your CPU using isopropyl alcohol (if not there are also some handier products to help you with this, some people even use after shave) to get rid of thermal grease. Then you will need to apply new thermal grease but that's nothing to worry about as it normally comes with a new CPU heatsink.

So if you know your motherboard model, please let me know and I will help you get it all sorted! (*ゝω・*)

Hey there too, Uninstall,

Oh yeah, now I remember that he said something along those lines. I think he also said that it's possible to replace only the fan, but the issue here is that the fan itself is not commonly sold and my best chances are through... "streetside stores," like so. He did offered me to check up his storage to see if there's any, but I kinda declined last time. I'll talk to him again when I meet him.

Meanwhile... how can I figure out what my "motherboard model" is?
I'm sorry but I'm not good at all with hardwares... there's just this anxiety that I'll mess something up and then stuff would become really haywire afterwards >_<

Hi Neo-Exile,

Sorry, I realised that your technician may have a point - I may have jumped to conclusions before as I forgot to ask the question whether your PC was pre-built/branded (HP, Dell, etc.) or built. My bad~ m(__)m

Also to help find your motherboard if you could quickly do me a favour and click start>search>"dxdiag" and let me know what the dialogue says under "System manufacturer", "System model", "BIOS" and "Processor"

Hi again Uninstall, (<--will this greeting really turn into a custom in this thread? Lol just thinking :P)

It's okay mate, no harm was done :) I think my PC was... 'built', because some of the original parts were upgraded into newer ones. The CPU itself is a Pentium4 3.00 GHz.

...Regrettably, that won't be possible for the moment since my PC had completely died. When I power it up, I hear some kind of fan from the mobo, but the monitor won't even get into the BIOS screen.
I don't think my monitor broke since it worked perfectly fine the day before. I could be wrong, though.

Doh! I completely forgot that your PC won't boot!! Sorry!! I must be tired
Anyway, Pentium4 uses socket 478 (please make sure with your technician in case I mess up again)
So if you don't really use your PC for intense CPU usage (which I can tell from your sig hehehehe), and want a low-sound heatsink, I recommend the Arctic Cooling Super Silent 4 Ultra TC - it costs about 15 euros where I live, but I'm not sure about the stock at around where you live. If not then I recommend the Silverstone SST-NT02, a bit louder and a bit bigger so you may want to make sure it fits in the case, and this comes at around the same price of 17 euros. If you want to do more research or ask around then I suggest remember that you will need a heatsink suitable for intel socket 478.
