Translating program for Visual Novels?

So I recently discovered that there were translation programs that can be used with visual novels to translate Japanese into English. However a lot of these programs seems to be coming from shady sources and honestly don't know which ones are safe/not. I'm pondering on whether to just download the "visual novel reader" but due to multiple sources which all seem to be teeming with viruses, I'm in a bit of a pickle...

Basically what programs are safe/recommended for me? I'm Japanese but studied little (although studying currently) Kanji, so I don't mind if it's just a program that can identify and translate kanji into hiragana/katakana/romaji, as I can read and understand fluently.

Thank you for reading and any help would be appreciated.

I can vouch for VNR being a safe/good program for hooking text and looking up kanji. I've been using it for just under an year now. Not only is it very convenient, it is constantly updated with bug fixes and new features. As for the viruses thing, while I'm not sure where you were looking for it, https://code.google.com/p/annot-player/ is completely safe.

edit: this is an example of what it can look like. i turned on the machine translation so you can see how it looks. the window can also be moved around if you'd rather have it somewhere else

Thanks for the reply, helped a lot. How did you manage to make the hiragana appear above the kanji by the way?

problem is from what i hear those programs arent that good at translating so i ussally prefer to wait till someone translates it

You're right those programs are known for sub par translations. If you have MeCab and edict enabled it significantly improves the quality of the machine translation produced by those programs so that you can actually read it without giving up.

would those programs in combination really give a good translation

I've used ith/atlas/mecab as my primary means of translation and, for a machine translation, it tends to work out... ok. You won't get every subtle nuance and since it's machine based, slang terms can throw it off, but all in all it works well enough to follow along with what's happening at least.

look at my group... I have the superprogram, the VNR! No, it's not a wonder, it's the VNR.

Can you give brief explanation as how to use those programs? Or at least that MeCab? Or edict?
