Since you have an interest in doing something involving scientific and tech things, I was thinking that maybe instead of doing astrophysics, you could try something else that involves the things you like but wouldn't put so much at stake and is easier to get into. Thing is, astrophysics isn't a field where you just need the degree (like how in IT you'll likely be trained again and what you learnt in school may be totally irrelevant to the particular needs of your company), you need all the knowledge as well. I can't just choose a random science degree and barely pass it only to then lag behind in astrophysics itself. I don't live in the US (would rather keep it private); it's just that the USD is more global so it's what I tend to use when talking about currencies :P

Like, despite common liberal arts stereotypes, I'm quite into scientific and techy stuff, but (at least for the latter) I think school simply sucked in teaching it.

I'm really sorry to hear that you're going through all that :( Sometimes Plan A fails in the beginning, but that's not to say it can never happen. Sometimes all you need is to take a detour to get where you want, so maybe in the future, after Plan B, you'll be able to make moving to Japan a reality
Short term goals can be anything, like getting some exercise into your day, drinking a glass of water when you wake up, save a bit of money today, studying for at least 3 hours this evening - little things basically. Just being able to tick something off - that you've accomplished something - is such a nice feeling because it really shows that you've gotten stuff done, whether it be big or small, and you're not in a standstill :)
I'd like to say something along the lines of, "trying not to think too much about the student loan and focus sorely on your studies" but it's not that easy, especially when that means you won't be getting money from the state because of it. I did some research to try and better understand your situation but please correct me if I'm wrong regarding any of this. When you mean get paid by the state, are you stalking about the social security welfare over in Sweden? And the student loan is from CNS? Do you think you could be eligible for 'boarding supplement' and 'student allowance'? Or would you be able to ask for help from your parents? Sorry, these questions probably seem rather redundant as I'm sure you've gone over every option possible for yourself already :c

The "what ifs" is indeed there all the time. What if I studied better, would I have a job now instead of just trying to improve myself mentally? What if I was the person to speak up against bullies, maybe I wouldn't have had to improve myself mentally in the first place? I have been improving myself for like 4 years now and it feels like I'm getting nowhere according to my future goals. Right now I'm trying to make up main and backup plans. Studying is one thing that stresses me up right now as I'll have to take a loan in order to do so and I'm 50/50 if I'll be able to do well. At the same time it's what I need to do or else I wont get anywhere...

Regarding economy huh. Well, over here in Sveden we got some system where if you don't work and does something to improve your current situation you'll get a low ammount of money from the state (435 usd) every month that is supposed to at least allow you to survive. Issue is that if any extra costs appears, like dentist for example, you'll have to tell them to give you a letter, which you give to dentist and ask dentist for the average cost of whatever you gonna do. Then you send back both papers to the state and then you pray to RNG that you'll get money for it so you can repair that tooth of yours. That combined with the fact that I won't be able to get money from the state when I take a loan means that I will be extra poor when studying and I'll be restricted towards buying anything if I wanna keep the loan as low as possible by the time I get done with studying.
Pretty much, I wonder why most worries have a tendency to come when you're about to sleep...
The "what ifs" is indeed there all the time. What if I studied better, would I have a job now instead of just trying to improve myself mentally? What if I was the person to speak up against bullies, maybe I wouldn't have had to improve myself mentally in the first place? I have been improving myself for like 4 years now and it feels like I'm getting nowhere according to my future goals. Right now I'm trying to make up main and backup plans. They say that Plan A always fails so I guess I'll never move to Japan then 8D
