I've been learning Japanese for a little while. Anyway, what I'm bothered by is this. だが……。 translated to the roman alphabet is taka..... and I've looked it up in the Japanese dictionaries as taka..., ta ka..., ta, and so on and I get meanings like hawk. However, when google or bing translates it, it comes back as however.... or but....

Can someone please explain it to me, because I see it often and would like to know it's true meaning. Usually it appears on the screen by itself.

Thanks,
Jeffrey

だが The romaji is 'da ga'...

Google and Bing are correct. The initial definition does mean 'but' or 'however'.

たが The romaji for that is 'taka'. Depending on the kanji, it can mean either 'hawk' or 'quantity'.

Hi Jeffrey (○・▽・○)ノ゛,

Indeed, as renren said だが means "however" and "タカ" or "鷹" means "hawk".
I do believe a more literal translation is the Latin name which I don't know (*´-`*)
However I haven't seen people spell that in hiragana, タカ is also a friendly nickname given to people with a name beginning with taka-/taku-, I had a friend who we called Taka, made it alot cooler because of the meaning. (There is also a kanji for taka which means "high") I believe there is also a cabaret who goes by Taka from Takashi
