A Petition to Ban Anime in the US?

I don't really live in US but this is just some joke, there is comments they love anime. Signing up with multi accounts it's not a big problem isn't it lol.

no, laws like this are always getting passed around but most of time, they get turned down.

Is this actually loosely based on historical fact? Very interesting if it is.

What I said is not loosely based. It is actual history.

Now for the general audience here, I doubt a... "petition" of this nature will be granted attention any time soon. As Ignis touched on, it is protected by the 1st amendment because anime is an art form and is subjective to every single person.

But... I am willing to say how my idiotic country is behaving right now... I would not be surprised if a "petition" such as this was brought before the public and then reviewed by the courts.

Sadly though, my statement is reinforced by all the advances and victories by small activists and minority groups.

I think it is also worth restating for people who didn't see the petition, but this thing is OLD. It isn't like they are trying to do this now. Also you need somewhere around 100k signatures before you can even try to get anywhere (and this site doesn't look very legit either). They are about as far away from that as we are from counting to a million (proportionally)!

To be very cynical here, I have found personally that when someone turns into a whistle blower and brings attention to anything for hoping of a ban... they themselves are closet obsessive with the same thing and just want to be a white knight while keeping the object they are trying to ban for themselves.

An interesting theory. I could see people doing that in public situations to save face, but otherwise I don't quite see the motive. But then again it is hard to understand why people do things when they have no idea themselves half the time.

I believe the motive for the whistle blowing action is increasing a banned object's value.

Two parts though... a good example is drugs.

Part 1: Just like drugs, if a drug is banned, but you went behind everyones' back and saved some for your self... You are first a hypocrite. You were part of the mob that lead to your drug's banning, but you kept some for yourself. This puts you in a very powerful position. You can keep it for yourself and use it, or you can sell the drug through a fence or dealer and get a boat full of money.

Part 2: When something is banned, the demand rises by like 9001 % (<--- See what I did there :P) The banned object's monetary value increases by an insane amount. If you kept the banned object(s) then you are a billionaire if you have enough... or a certain kind that everyone wants.

So with both parts I detailed here, everything is about the money. All it is money. I have never seen anything lobbied or banned without some soft cash advance, kickback, shares, something that has money. If anyone tries to have anime banned, it is not the individual pushing for the ban. It is a large corporation or a private interest firm. You know, some collective that has money to pay the way for something to be removed.

Hmm my version of cynicism is that very few people are that smart, and in the long run that can just be shooting yourself in the foot. Also for something like anime or drugs, it would be putting yourself in a very dangerous position, because people would be far more likely to check your dealings once you bring yourself to the forefront of some movement (especially those who don't want the ban).

It makes more obvious sense when there is already questionable legality involved, and the act of banning is protecting profits rather than generating new ones, from my point of view. Think the entertainment industry.

Touche! on all your points.

The most cunning people though know that to deal with illegalities is to perform illegal stuff in plain view. You yourself never have to be seen in public. Just act the figure head and have minions do you your work indirectly.

Hmm... maybe I should try being like this one day. Totally evil and making lots of money while absolutely looking like a savior to the public! It must work. certain "gentlemen" do it every day :P

people all they need is some reason to make a stink out something

its not something that will be passed into law unless the government or the general populace see a benefit in doing so.

You probably missed the glory of hexagonal water from yesterday. This is what the smart people do, for the dumb people. Please enjoy: http://www.amazon.com/Vitalizer-Plus-Hexagonal-Oxygen-mineral/dp/B0017SJFEG

Trigger warning: lots of dumb people in there, so much so that you might feel like crying. The level of their incompetence is absurd.

But you could choose something that they wont disagree with just to prove that theyre idiots for generalizing anime with two shows :/
Ah yes, so desu. I still would't do it though, like showing it to my mother lol, or some person born in the 50s with meat and potatos and a glass of milk on the table and hard physical labor :p I don't think certain kinds or generations of people are able to understand, therefore I personally would rather just save myself the awkwardness.
GenKiDan; Sorry, my bad! I think I just saw the picture of Yuno, and the forefront 'G' in glass noodles and thought it was you! XD
haha I had a suspicion it was that...very funny you mentioned it, very strange indeed, cause when I came to the thread at first it was like as if for a moment I thought I was looking at myself, myself...:o rly odd how that association was so strongly linked to me that even I myself was a bit surprised.
Will98; somehow I had a mention from you as well...

I found that a funny read ^^ not in a bad or rejective way.

All this talk about banning made me envision ppl seelling bootlegs like mary jane xD Market value 9001% yeay. I think I saw what you did thare.

Okay.... I read that listing... and the reviews.... The people selling that thing.... "Master Bull-Shitters." The environmentalist engi is spot on.

The other people...... /me gets out a sword

Hurry before it spreads!

Now this is another way anything can get brought to the public, reviewed by courts and banned. Manipulation of the masses, lots and lots money.... then really just waiting for courts to reach a decision.

Those guys are most certainly mastered. Their wording is complex enough that people will respect it, without most people realizing it is gibberish, and they have covered their bases as far as avoiding suing goes. You can't really shut them down when they make no claims.

Some of the smarter people where I got this suggested that if this kind of trick wasn't inherently immoral, then they should develop a team to corner the market on these types of scams to fund themselves. Frankly I would be terrified to see what they might be able to accomplish, if they united for evil XD

their is nothing to be accomplished here, they not enough critical evidence. If violent games haven't been banned yet, anime won't be anytime soon.

Will history does repeat itself, alot world wide problems.

The conversation has digressed, I'm afraid. That post wasn't about anime banning at all. :P

Ignis, c'mon and post already. :P
I was just having fun reading the replies. One thing I noticed is the general increased cynicism to this kind of grandstanding nowadays. Sure, the petition itself is old (not that it'd matter much anyway even if it were recent and accomplished 100k signatures -- the site isn't an officially-sanctioned soapbox venue), but I recall reading something similar a couple years ago on a similar topic with a similar nature. At that time, many people were like "oh noes plzplzplz don't take away my Chinese cartoons."

Nice to see people being more aware and generally more critical, I guess.

No, we are still talking about banning anime.

We are just talking about how anime can be banned.

Now I already said it before and I will say it again. The way my country is acting now, I would not be surprised if anime in general was brought before the public in an attempt of getting banned. Small groups and minorities are taking home victories like never before.

But now that I am thinking about this.... it would not be anime in general but the hentai and ecchi anime that would be moved for a ban..

Yes I could potentially see action taken against hentai and ecchi, but I find it unlikely.

@Ignis my first reaction to any kind of claim is always to be skeptical (subsides a bit if I trust the source). I think this developed from me getting really angry when people would tell me false information to answer my questions, for whatever reason, when I was a kid. >_>

I developed such scepticism after I arrived at my own conclusion that the general public is stupid and little more than a flock of sheep. ┐(´・ω・`)┌ And for this kind of hand-waving by that kind of bunch, the scepticism metre significantly goes up even more. (Especially since the underlying law and circumstances give it just basically a zero chance to succeed.)

yeah i think hentai and ecchi anime are more at risk but to the general public they can't differentiate between the 2.

so the safe bet for them would be to ban anime as a whole.
