Well, he was medically retired from the Army because he was injured in Iraq, so right now he is still getting his medical retirement from the Army, but if the shutdown doesn't end soon they will take that away as well. So he is looking for a temporary job until all this is over with.

Yeah that's true, China is the 2nd biggest economy now, so if their economy crumbled, it would also affect the global economy, you are right also in saying the world has become so globalized, and that's not really a good thing, if a few economies go under it will effect the whole world
