16191 Video games are always and will always exist to be played for fun, but playing for money is something that came just naturally, everything that's sport related or competition related has always had connections in therms of money because there will also always exist people that want to be the best and to prove that there are tournaments and the prizes are generally money. So yes you are right but money will always be involved somehow.

Well that's because they are sponsored by certain brands or companies and the way that works, i would say that they pay for them to show up at these events or tournaments with something special like clothes or even their handle(nickname) with something related to the brand or company. For example i could be Coca-Cola-DPL. And that alone is me helping out this brand and they pay me for doing so, i guess that if i would win a tournament, part of the money goes to them too.
