Disney Buys Toei Animation
Toei Annimation Studios has agreed to a buyout by the Walt Disney Corporation. Disney is purchasing Toei to expand into what it calls "Americanized Anime."
A Disney spokesman says, "There has always been a large difference between American animation and Japanese anime. Our goal is to close the gap by producing anime that is more Americanized, and Western animation with more of an anime feel. Anime will look more like Disney, and Disney will look more like anime."
One of the first projects will be a series called "Samurai Duck," starring Donald Duck as a wandering samurai mercenary, fighting ninjas in Edo Era Japan.
Another progect will be a crossover series between Sailor Moon and The Little Mermaid as Sailor Triton (one of the moons of Neptune.)
Other projects will be announced once the sale is finalized.
Here is the entire 51 page buyout plan, written in both English and Japanese, with notes and bibliography.
A new feature is also planned for Tokyo Disneyland, celebrating the merger of the two animation styles.
