In recent months we've seen a sharp increase in spambot registrations. While ten-thousands of them already failed at the door, around one percent managed to make it through and attempted to post. Luckily we have a secondary defense mechanism that kept our members from ever seeing those posts. Please note that I said "members" - the staff had to manually sort out everything that got caught in the second line of defense to separate legit posts/threads from spam. This whole process is, of course, a waste of server and human resources.

In order to give staff some more time to focus on the actually important aspects, we decided to strengthen our primary defenses: Our logs show that most of the spambots that got through did so by using a third-party service to solve the captcha. These third-party services usually rely on unskilled labor from low-wage countries to manually solve captchas and fail at anything more complex than a normal OCR-based protection.

To exploit that weakness, we want to add a couple of randomly selected questions to the registration process and thus hopefully get rid of the spambot pest once more (without inconveniencing new members, of course).

Now this is where you come in - please devise some awesome questions following these criteria:

  • Questions have to be simple and the answers considered common knowledge.
  • Questions should have an objectively right answer that can be easily googled.
  • Questions should be one-liners.
  • Questions should avoid sensitive topics (religion, politics, racism, etc.).
  • Questions should be machine-translatable (not every registrant speaks English well).
  • Answers should consist out of at most two words or a number.
  • If there's more than one possible way to write the answer, please provide all of them.

Please avoid questions based on specific anime (e.g. "Who did Shinji fap to?"), math ("1 + 1 = ?"), or the current date ("What day is today?").

Here's some examples of acceptable questions and their answers:

What is the capital of Japan?
Tokyo, tokyo, 東京

Water boils at ___ degree Celsius.
One Hundred, one hundred, One hundred, 100, One-hundred, one-hundred

Do you own a phone?

Oh yee some of those are pretty good ones!... others maybe not quite so much.

Can they be answered intrinsically? Such as:
What is this colour? Red, red, FF0000

Since questions in that format could get you a few different ones right there. If you want to encourage light "googling" for answers to discourage non-bot applicants who don't really want the site's features (which you should probably state with the question, as to not confuse newbies), you could also try a schema:

Who wrote the book "Of Mice and Men"? John Steinbeck, john, steinbeck.

That would be a pretty efficient method of making several dozen.

Another Ten :samuraihero:

1.What covers 70% of Earth's surface?

2. What animal goes "Purrr"?

2,000,000,000
5000

6.What is the largest animal on Earth?
Blue Whale
Lion
Elephant

7.How far is the Moon away from Earth
238,900 miles
402,255,234 miles
777,132 miles

8.What is the largest Continent on Earth?
Asia
North America
Africa

9.Approximately how long is the average Day?
24 hrs
10 hrs
40 hrs

10. What is the largest Ocean on Earth?
Pacific Ocean
Atlantic Ocean
Indian Ocean

Hope you at least accept one.

I think you mistook the acceptable answers as multiple choices. The questions aren't meant to have only one correct answer among a number of choices; they're supposed to have only one answer but can be answered in more than one way. For example, the question about boiling temperature for water can be answered by either "100" or "one hundred," both of which are correct, but different when typed.

You're making questions for a machine to process and humans to answer. Humans may answer a question in different ways even though they all mean the same, but the machine cannot interpret "100" as "one hundred." It needs to recognise both answers as correct, and that's where the alternate answers come in.

[MENTION=40283]Yee199[/MENTION];
Your questions are too technical, too complicated, and fall heavily under the questionable category. This is not a multiple choice test, this is not a test of knowledge.

[MENTION=37707]FinalPyre[/MENTION];
It's possible, although we would avoid asking visual question. Although this forum probably doesn't have a lot of visual impaired individuals (color blinded, partially blinded, or totally blinded), we are not trying to make it harder for such person to register for one.

However question like this are accepted:

What is the color of the sky?
Blue, blue, sky blue, Sky blue, Sky Blue, Light Blue, light blue, Light blue etc etc are corrected.

hmm how about that question~ :runhappy:

What juice do you like?

apple, apple juice, orange, orange juice, mango, mango juice, strawberry, strawberry juice, cake, juicy cake, melon, melon juice, honey, honey juice, lemon, lemon juice, peach, peach juice, juicy, juicy juice, 1 juice, 2 juices, 3 juices, 4 juices, 5 juices, 6 juices, 7 juices, 8 juices, 9 juices, 0 juices, lots of juices,

[MENTION=46616]InorixShu[/MENTION]; That would require us to list every possible juice - meaning all kinds of fruits and combinations thereof. Too many answers too think of, sorry.

-.-

-How many fingers does a normal human being have ?
10, Ten,

-How many toes does the average person have ?
10, Ten,

Are you going to copy paste some of this stuff btw ? Since I'm sure you can think of quite a lot of alternatives without much help :p Cause if it's not meant as a way of having the actual work done but more for inspiration (which sounds very questionable) then one can just follow the simple pattern, otherwise I'll type up some more, like:

-How many arms does a human have ?
2, Two,

-How many wheels does most cars have ?
4, Four,

-How much does 1 liter of water weigh ?
1kg, 1000g,

-How many wheels does a bicycle have ?
2, Two,

-Is loli cute ?
Yes /No= what are you doing here, did you get lost on the web again ? Server error 10.000.....

-How many tails does a Cat have ?
1, One, =Good you answered correctly, next time we'll ask you about kitsune ok.

-Is the Moon really made of cheese ?
No,

Better make a private sub-function for that :P

congratz, I think most of your submission works according to our criteria

1kg, 1000g,

Weight != Mass
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_versus_weight

And so the correct answers are:
9.81 N, 10 N , 9.81e-3 kN, 10e-3kN, 9.81e-6 MN, 10e-6MN .....

...all that assuming water density is 1000 kg/m^3, what about 999.8 kg/m^3 ? ;)

More correct answers (What if we have members from GB or the US?):
2.24 lbf, 2.20 lbf

[/troll]

That's what I thought on that specific question (mostly because of the metric/non metric), that one is going to get axed. Others will be reworded.

Sry I may not be up to par on your trolling level ^, but 1 liter of water(unless your on mars) weighs 1 kg... At least in normal layman's terms. And you added a 't' at the end of my word :s

Though the GB and US measuring system is something I thought of briefly as well, valid point ofc.

....'They see me rollin.....they TROLLIN !'

That's what I thought on that specific question (mostly because of the metric/non metric), that one is going to get axed. Others will be rewarded.
Oh argatou checko sama, rly it was not that much of a deal so you don't have to go out of your way grin.jpg

Let's troll :D :D
First, let us assume your points are zero (0).

Sorry I may not be up to par on your trolling level ^, but 1 liter of water(unless your on mars) weighs 1 kg... At least in normal layman's terms.

Same mistake again my friend, here is the correct one:
......but 1 liter of water(even if you are on mars) has a mass of 1 kg....

So no, 1 liter of water doesn't weigh 1 kg on Mars, it weighs:
W = Mass of it (1 kg) * acceleration of Mar's gravity

And you added a 't' at the end of my word :s

Ah my bad!, you are right, let's add 1 to your points.
Now you have (1) points.

I'm a considerate modest troll, I accept my mistakes, see?

Oh argatou checko sama, really it was not that much of a deal so you don't have to go out of your way grin.jpg

Whoops, I got you there, he didn't mean 'to reward you', he indeed meant to 'reword' your sentences.

reworded = change the words/sentence to something better or more grammatically correct :P
Code:
http://www.thefreedictionary.com/reworded

Let's subtract (1) from your total points.
Now you're back to 0 :D :D

While it's good to prepare people for their future lives as astronauts, it's not good to derail this thread with it. Hush, the both of you.

Here are my suggestion as my humble apology (notice that my self-esteem persuaded me to defend myself (and my post, hence my knowledge) and reply to his scientific blasphemy, it wasn't really me at all, I would have let it pass!).

-26

How many eyes does a human have?
-2/two/tow(for English noobs :D)

How many lets does a sheep/dog/cow/horse have?

you go to school by:
