Hello everyone~

If you're reading visual novels and depend on translation programs and text hookers, here's a small guide into the new ITH (Interactive Text Hooker) that has been developed.

I'll update more if there are people who need help with other things. For now, I'll just show the basics of ITH and a few things about Translation Aggregator (TA).

I'm sure there are people who use Chiitrans. That's also another choice, but this thread will focus more on ITH and Translation Aggregator.

A solution to the game Wolf RPG. If you have a similar game, then scroll to the bottom of this post, labelled "Solution to Wolf RPG", to find the solution.

Updated: 18 December 2017

Thanks to Frankincense All images in the thread that are dead have been re-uploaded again.

Quick Note

- Some of the things in this guide may require ATLAS, a translation program.
- Here is the site for those unfamiliar: http://www.fujitsu.com/global/services/software/translation/atlas/downloads/

Like I mentioned, this small guide is to mainly help people with ITH and TA. I won't go into detail about ATLAS, but I would recommend it for 'quick, overall translations'.

Interactive Text Hooker

1. First thing you should check is when you open ITH and your game...

- Go to ITH and press the 'Process' button.
- Search for the name of your game.
- Click the game's name and click 'Add Profile'. Press 'OK'.

Here's an example below. My game's name is 'PersonA'.

step.png

2. To make sure it's added, go to ITH and press 'Profile'.

Here's an example below. As you can see, the game is added.

step1.png

3. Next, go to ITH and press 'Option'. Make sure these are checked and press 'OK'.

- Auto attach
- Auto insert
- Auto copy to clipboard
- Auto suppress repetition

These enable the translation from Japanese to English and captures the text.

Here's an example below.

step2.png

4. In ITH, insert the hook you have in that rectangular white box.

I'll be using my hook /HW4@42E3A2.

As you can see below, my text is all jumbled repeated Japanese...

step3.png

5. After you type the hook and press 'Enter', you then press 'Hook' on ITH.

Scroll to find your hook. It should be labelled 'UserHook' or labelled with the numbers and letters you inserted as the hook. Then select that hook and press 'OK'.

See below for the example.

Step4.png

6. Click the text/dialogue box in your game or anywhere so ITH can detect/pick up the text with its new hook you inputted.

See below... just click somewhere so ITH can generate your new hook.

step5.png

7. Go back to the front of ITH, and scroll until you find 'UserHook' or whichever new hook you inputted, and pick the hook that corresponds and displays the right text for your game.

See below for the example.

step6.png

Result: It should generate the text like this picture below.

step7.png

8. Go to ITH, and press 'Save'. This saves the hook and makes sure that if you open ITH again, the hook you used will be there the next time you play.

9. Please close/exit ITH. Then open it up again. If you did it correctly, when you press 'Profile', you should see your hook.

Here is an example.

Translation Aggregator

Once you have downloaded TA and saved it in a suitable location, please check the following things to get you started.

1. Please download Mecab and the edict files for Jparser.

Mecab

- Download Mecab here: http://code.google.com/p/mecab/downloads/list
- If you haven't installed Mecab before, download the '.exe' (execution file).
- If you have installed it before, just download the updates with the extensions '.tar.gz'.
- When installing, choose a dictionary other than 'UTF16' like 'UTF8'.

Jparser

- Download Jparser here: http://www.csse.monash.edu.au/~jwb/edict_doc.html
- Download either 'edict.gz' or 'edict2.gz' or both.
- Decompress it and put it in TA's 'dictionaries' folder.

Please see below if you aren't sure.

la1.png

la2.png

2. Open TA, click 'Tools', and make sure these two things are checked.

- Translate from = Japanese
- Translate to = English

Here's an example just in case.

aggr1.png

aggr2.png

3. If you have done it correctly, you can open TA with ITH and your game running.

As you can see below, Jparser can translate text if you hover over the word. You can see Mecab is functioning and the other translation boxes as well.

Extra Tip for Translation Aggregator

If you would like to see your game's top menu bar in English, please do the following.

1. When you open TA, go to 'Tools', and go to 'Launch Text Hooker'.

If you're not sure, here's a picture.

steps3.png

2. Find your game and double-click it or press 'Open'. Once done, please click 'OK'.

Here's an example. My game is 'PersonA'.

steps4.png

3. Hover over your game's menu bar and it should change to English.

See below for an example.

1.
/Ks2 should work, but if no one can answer you question I suggest using VNR. https://code.google.com/p/annot-player/
WolfEngine doesn't need any hook codes and the repetitions are already removed.
Plus Chiitrans2 is already an abandonware.
5Kz2tW4fJb.jpg

Go to preferences and do this:

Run the game and Go to options:

2.
Update
If anyone ever run into the same problem as me:
Run the game through agth separately instead of trying to start it from Chii.
Command line I was recommended is: "c:/agth.exe" /c /x3 /kf64:16 /ks2 "game.exe"
Turn on Chii after you set it with the right monitored thread on AGTH.
Check "Enable clipboard monitoring" on Chii and "Check for repeating phrases"
If you're using ChiiTrans2, just run game and select "AGTH inject (...)"

Now I got both software working as I wanted
VNR is perfect for me to play VNs and some other games on fullscreen (specially with widescreen)
And Chii for windowed RPGs!

I take no credit on that solution, I'm not sure if I can mention other forums here.

could you maybe upload the version you are using,
since every version i try will not work, (i am following the guide step by step)
(asus n76vz win10 fall update)

Do you have Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015 (x86) installed?
https://www.microsoft.com/download/details.aspx?id=48145

(BTW, imgur banned ASF, so images hosted there will not appear here. I already saw your screenshot though.)

its now working.

which is odd since i already had visual C++ installed. (could have been the wrong version)
ironically the text is in korean, (which i do not mind, since i know which button is wich)

I need help in finding a working hook for a game that uses RPG Maker VX Ace. Basically, whenever I attach the Game.exe (there is only one that shows in the process list), I'm given hooks that correspond to the UI of the player but the narration/dialog is no where to be found. I've looked up guides related to my problem but they're all for RPG Maker MV and their programs don't work for me.

Thank you @renano for this thread. I didn't know that these two software existed. I have so many visual novels, fictions and light novels that i wanted to read but couldn't because there are too many new kanjis, so i couldn't use a kanji handwritten recognition system because i would spend all day writing kanjis. So i was limited with my reading ability in japanese. But now i can finally read 東方香霖堂 and of course 監獄戦艦2~要塞都市の洗脳改造~ . Only downside is that i have to manually copy and paste each new word to anki myself. Do someone know if there's a tool or a plugin to use with Translation aggregator to do this automatically?

Ok i for future reference: i didn't find a tool or a plugin to automatically copy and paste each new word to anki instead of doing it manually. So i have to do it manually for the moment, if i have more time in the future, i will develop a solution for this myself.

Hey there, I'm not sure what Anki does, but if you need an automatic dictionary you can use Mecab in translation aggregator (it gives you information if you hover on the character or word you need)
Another thing you can do is: hook the game and play the section you want (or leave it on auto), until ith stays hooked it will keep all the text it has seen written in it window, the you can select all and copy it to a text so you have it written down if you want to study it or something.

edit: In the case of kangoku senkan it should also be pretty easy to extract the script file if you need it

Thank you for your reply @progste. Anki is a flashcard program, and i use it to learn new vocabulary and importing the vocabulary into anki was a hassle because i had to do it manually with each new word. Thanks to you i found a way to extract the whole script to read and learn from it. Thank you very much again.

Hey guys, to make the first post complete I Suggest adding links to the various ITH versions and ATLAS

ITHVNR: https://mega.nz/#!ng4hRKTK!Q1BToG2gZhI3yzLoU7UYXV1AsHAfgPWfbPc9aZonZ_k

ATLAS: https://nyaa.si/view/89984

Also, cyberworks (Tinkerbell/Wendybell) games from 2009 to 2017 don't display the correct text unless used with NTLEAs, I suggest putting it as a note in the first post so people know about it and maybe it helps for some other games

NTLEAs: https://archive.codeplex.com/?p=ntlea

you should mention that people have to set their system time to 15/11/2015 to install it (this was the date i used)
otherwise the installer will auto-shut down

I was thinking: We should also add that in Windows 10, changing the compaibility Mode Settings to either Windows 8 or Windows 7 can in 90% cases be the solution to many problems.

For some visual novels ITHVNR doesn't work, but the original ITH work and for some it's ITH that's not working but ITHVNR, it really depends on the game.

For me ithvnr works on windows 10 (it's the version i linked) with pretty much all games that can be hooked, maybe it depends on what lybraries you have installed? It could also be useful to add an exception in Windows Defender as it may be blocking it as a virus.
Vnr also works usually but i leave it as a last resort since i hate how bloated and slow it is.

You're right, it depends on the libraries, or to be more exact, the libraries which are in each windows version. It happens more to notebooks than desktop pc for example, because the fabricant add a layer of customizations which in itself is good to "customize" the pc but can be and often is not compatible with pc many games and software, not just visual novels.
Fortunately though what is happening now is that many developer are making tools and visual novels Windows 8.1/10 compatible, which is good. But for me, to simply avoid bugs, i suggest to run the visual novel in compability mode and in most cases everything will be fine.

And you'ree absolutely right with ITHVnR it's a horror, i don't like it, it distract me from enjoying each visual novel that i play. That's why i'm learning japanese, to be less dependant on tools.

Don't confuse ithvnr (ith with a different engine) with vnr (bloated mess)
But yes, in any case these are temporary solutions, the best way to enjoy VNs would be learning japanese or get a propee translation but ith is very useful if you use it to have your text ready tonbe pasted into a dictionary when yiu find a word you don't know

Okay noted, iTHVNR is different from VNR (Visual novel reader) which is another text hooker, i just googled it.
Unfortunately most visual novels i want to read are not translated and never will or not in the foreseeable future. I need less and less a dictionary because i read a lot of light novels in addition of visual novels.
Your advise on extracting text from visual novel was great, it helps me a lot to progress in japanese.
What i did was extract the text and some CG for references from 監獄戦艦2, formatted it, converted it to kindle format, read and analyze it on my kindle, which was very effective.
