Well, there is are studies that kind of tell why. For a quick summary: people are horrible at imagining numbers, in general the impact of saying one person died and the impact of saying 200 persons died is surprisingly close to the same.

I called her and said, "You know, forget it, I won't go out with you, you are too damn annoying." after which she started crying about how I'm an ass, everyone is an ass, about how nobody wants to go out with her and she will hang herself if I don't. I just said "Go ahead and do it.", dropped the call, turned my phone off and went to sleep... When I turned my phone back on, not a single message or call came from her after that and I never bothered calling her afterwards...』

Uh, I'm guessing you've made it a note to never watch/read the news? They would easily find out almost instantly that you were talking to her before she died, so (as long as your police force isn't complete shit) you would at least be brought in for questioning.

Nightcore eh? I remember them (not that they are really a group, as much as they tried to be, afaik).
