Back in 2004 Utah amended the state constitution defining marriage as between a man and a woman and outlawing anything even similar to marriage for homosexuals. Dec 20th a federal judge ruled that utah's amendment 3 was unconstitutional. Making gay marriage legal. For a while at least, the state succeeded in getting a stay on the ruling from the supreme court pending the district courts ruling on the state appeal. Meaning the law went back to what it was. It was a huge fiasco here, the religious right was having an stroke. One nut was even fasting until the ruling was nullify...now they're wasting millions of tax payer dollars to fight an unwinable appeal. It's been an entertaining show from the side lines.

As long as the definition doesn't infringe of the rights of the people. Which amendment 3 does, by saying gays cant get married it demeans them and infringes on their rights. The judge that overturned it worded it much better then I can.

Unfortunately they're stuck being involved. It has a crap load of stuff to do with property ownership, taxes and crap like that.
