Edit: Who is cram? :reallyconfused:

WESTERN DIGITAL EXTERNAL HARD DRIVES SUCK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No, they don't. I got 7 of them, all working and 3 out of 5 Seagate were dead after 2 years but I got 1 new at december, maybe it has more luck (only 5400 rpm)

Dammit my other External Hard Drive is Seagate

Problem: They were 7200 rpm drives so they life shorter in statistics. Bought them 2009 and 2010 because they had higher transfer rates, died 2011 and 2012... Were all three new, different production lines/numbers. Very suspicious! Got instead WD. Everyone 5400 rpm.
In relation to my first external from WD (had Toshiba before, what a crap! Firmware problems and so on) in the year 2005 (still working! good boy) I would say WD is pretty safe. None of them died. If you want I can post the hours they were alive, the oldest has about 36.000 hours and over 1.100 starts. About 1/3 lifetime already elapsed and does never get high temperature like the seagates. Wish I had money for the 4TB MyBook, looks fine and has an active cooling as far as I know and I could send my old WD drives into retirement.

Edit: CrystalDiskInfo is a pretty smart application for information about the drives

:goodtea:

What happened? I own one

It keeps randomly disconnecting from my laptop, and always makes a weird clicking noise, then just dies. I Just called Western Digital, my Hard Drive is still under warranty so I will get a free replacement

it's all about how lucky you are

Yes that too. But the companies producing different. I would say that Seagate says they can have 1 failure out of 100 and WD says that they can 1 failure out of 1000. Different companies, different quality, different prices, that's the answer for me why the Seagates are (mostly) cheaper than WD with the same features

Not cool but it's nice from WD that you get a replacement :goodtea:

It depends really. The drives may be produced in different countries. Products sold in one country may have better quality than those sold in another, although they are of the same branding and are the same product.

Of course if anyone can provide advice I'd gladly listen

Edit: Sorry, misunderstood your question. Do you want that I write the statistics?
