I dunno if this is allowed, just tell me if it isn't, but there is another forums called
animerender.com, most of them specialize on GFX (Graphics) stuff, including signature and avatar making using mostly Photoshop, I mostly learned my Sig Making and Avatar Making techniques there for quite a very long time now, but right now I have less time to do them, so I only stick to these. XD
In any case, you can visit their forums too, you must register though, so you can gain access to the Tutorials, and there are a lot of tutorials there, and post quite a bit so you can gain even more access to their stocked renders, but in any case the most basic I think would be the color combinations in Signatures, monotone is quite boring for my eyes as well. XD
Here is one of the very useful tutorials out there:
http://elementsunleashed.deviantart.com/art/The-Principles-of-Color-43686680 (click the image so you can enlarge it even more)
-2nd one would be lighting, you can search this on the forums I mentioned too, after registering.
-Another one is Fractals and then C4Ds.
-Then lastly, but optional is texts, the forums I mentioned has tutorials on most of these stuffs, you can search them there.
Good luck, you can see the signatures of some of the users here too, and if you recognized some effects, you may try googling for some tutorials as well on other sites, for example you saw some sort of a smoke effect on a signature, you can search about that "smoke effect signature tutorial" in the net as well, there are various tutorials out there for different effects too, you only need to keep on creating more and more signatures and such to make yourself better, and then combining all that you have currently learned on every new signature you make so as to see for yourself what combination of these effects would make your work more beautiful, practice makes perfect.
And if you can, as much as possible, avoid monotone signatures, because more or less, they might bore the one viewing it, so make it colorful by using the right combination of colors, through the tutorial I linked above as one of the effective learning materials, but it's still up to you if you want to create such sigs. XD
