My favourite manga was, is and will always be 'Maison Ikkoku' by Rumiko Takahashi. An absolutely great read. Btw the anime adaption is just as good.
Ah, Bazett, "Maison Ikkoku" is pretty old manga. It is a comedy. Love story (not pornographic) between Kanrinin-san (Otonashi Kyouko, Chigusa Kyouko as maiden name) and Godai-kun. I enjoyed this manga largely.
The amusing point of this manga is that the names of major characters are all contain "number". For instance, Otonashi = 0, Chigusa = 1000, Godai-kun = 5, etc. Major characters names contain 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9.. (I confirmed in the past).

Tenjou no Niji by Satonaka Machiko (started in around 1990, still on-going. vol.21 is the latest, I think). The story of the life of Empress Jitou (ca. 7th century)
+ あさきゆめみし
Asaki Yumemishi by Yamato Waki (13 volumes, I think). The manganization of "The Tale of Genji"by Lady Murasaki.
+ 風と木の詩
Kaze to Ki no Uta by Takemiya Keiko. Shounen-ai manga in 1970's. This is the first and most famous work in this genre.
+ イズァローン伝説
Izu-a-Roon Densetsu by Tkaemiya Keiko. Fantasy and shounen-ai manga in 1980's.
+ ポーの一族
Poe no Ichizoku by Hagio Moto. Shounen-ai manga in 1970's.
+ 銀の三角
Gin no Sankaku by Hagio Moto. Masterpiece (in my opinion), sci-fi. One volume story. In 1970's, I think.
+ アルカサルー王城
Al Casar - Oujou by Aoike Yasuko. Historical romance and adventure. stated in around 1990. ended in 2007. (13 volumes). The story of the Life of King Don Pedro in Castilla in 14th century.
+ クリスタル☆ドラゴン
Cristal Dragon by Ashibe Yuuho. Historical fantasy story. Of Celtic girl, Arianrhod in 1st century. (stated in 1981, on-going. latest volume is Vol.25)
These may be old books for you. I am buying and reading recent manga books. But favourite manga are rare.

Quo Vadis by Shintani Kaoru and Saeki Kayo. Sci-fi, historical, mysterious, ?? story. (started in 2007, on-going. Vol. 11 is the latest.) "Quo Vadis" is Latin phrase, meaning "Where are you go". The title of the novel by Henryk Sienkiewicz.
