In reality the best option would be not to give him money, but rather food since you wouldn't know what they'd spend the money on, such as alcohol, drugs, gambling, etc. Giving them food ensures that they survive for another day until they're able to work themselves. Its a good thing you considered a job since that would be one of the more appropriate choices.

I would however find something long enough to get the item or try to shake the tree so it would drop it.
