Well my race doesn't breathe... But I have an idea.
Your story start off with the players being in complete blackness, maybe that could be a dark void that acts as a median to entering the school.
And I just so happened to never leave since the gas didn't effect me.
So I've been standing around/ wandering since then and was only notice now.
