So, i took a better look at the dat files, it looks like it's not ascii, there are randopm japanese characters ehre and there and most of them seem to make no sense. My theory is that this is how their text is encrypted and to get an intelligible version we would have to reverse-engineer their exe, which i'm not capable of.
In addition there is the fact that even when running the game, in the gaidens and onward you get random letters if you don't run it with a locale emulator (so even changing the windows locale doesn't work). I think that is caused by part of their encryption and it is possible that we're only getting random symbols because of this. Unfortunately i don't know a way of running the decrypter through ntleas or other locale emulators.
