Oh, well I most certainly buy all my electronics myself. :P

I also just spent the summer working, and for someone who is hired as part time help... they gave me a lot of hours (5 shifts quite a few weeks, which is generally over 40 hours). :P
Then I also got a raise about a month ago :D
Then there is also the thing where I probably won't buy much of anything for the next year (maybe some manga here and there), so all in all I can rationalize myself into making the purchase. Still wish it was cheaper though, of course. XD

Hope it is as good as I am expecting, and that it serves me well for the ~3.5 years that I need it.

Well yeah if you are buying 2-300 dollar machines, they are probably a few years old by the time you get them already. :/

That still isn't so great though. My last one was great for about 3 years, and then starting having heat issues after that, but still worked fine for the most part. Just stopped using it in January when I built my desktop. Now my sister is using it and as far as I've heard it is getting the job done. What a trooper!

I was just talking about 3 different machines, but I'll assume you mean the one I just bought? Will be mainly for watching anime and writing/learning code at school. I want it to have enough power to run little games and such that I may code (but no GPU needed, just use processor and integrated graphics), so power wasn't a huge concern. i5 will more than cover it.

The main thing I wanted was a good screen, which was horrendously hard to come by, but this one has a really good one. High res screen gives me more desktop space even though it is a smaller device (and glorious IPS makes things shine like the sun) and I didn't want anything glossy - had to be matte.
I actually saw one for ~800 that had all the specs I needed, but then it turned out that the screen was glossy (how could you, Asus!?), and that was a deal-breaker. :(

This one is basically an unnecessarily good screen.

Glossy screen is like what lots of small laptops, tablets and such use. Apple became a bit infamous for opting to only use glossy screens. Basically they have a bit better contrast, and more vibrant colours (though less accurate), but they indeed reflect the light. If you get into a bright room, or are outside, or have a light fixture behind you, they become completely worthless really fast. Even in okay lighting you can still normally see your reflection.

Matte disperses the light, so you get a bit duller colours and a little less contrast, but it does a decent job averting these problems, and has no annoying reflections.

My tablet that I've had for a few years has a glossy screen obviously, and I can't count the times where it has been rendered either a pain to use or just unusable because of the reflection. :(

Man is it obvious now that I love talking tech? XD
