My Japanese isn't that good, but I guess it's something like this:

"That is a convenient store."
「あれは便利な店です。」

"Why don't you go to the convenience store?"
「コンビニに行ったらどうですか。」

But it would feel odd to replace convenience store with convenient store.

You are saying that it feels unnatural to say 便利店 instead of コンビニ despite both words meaning the same thing right?
(I might be confusing myself here and I don't think this is the right place to post this kinda stuff >.>)

Translating, 便利な店 would be convenient store (a store that is convenient) and コンビニ would be convenience store (like 7-Eleven, I think is 7i in Japan or something..?)
So "Why don't you go to the convenience store?" 「コンビニに行ったら？」would not feel odd but "Why don't you go to the convenient store?" 「便利な店に行ったら？」might.
