A Goban is the correct answer. I guess some of the hints would be a bit harder to understand if you don't play the game (I think any Go player would get it almost instantly :P).

I was going to guess that. though the black and white is a misdirection.

I did realize it would deflect attention to chess, since that is more widely known, however it is also integral to Go. It would be far more difficult to guess without it, unless I could think of something better. Alluding to stones might have worked, but most people might still be thrown off because glass pieces are what is used now.

If it is not obvious I enjoy the game. Sorry if the riddle was a little too convoluted, but it still didn't take too long to crack! I was mostly worried that people might not know what Go was, but there was that Hikaru no Go anime/manga a while back so I thought it might still be known to the anime crowd. :)

Really the most important hint was the last line, but it might be lost on people who don't play the game because of wordplay with "reading". :P
