I think in general, putting a stone in the middle makes you look more like a jackass, but sometimes it can make for really crazy weird games (my friend developed what he called "demented Chinese opening" where he basically did the popular Chinese opening, but in the middle of the board, the amount of success he had with it was disturbing XD).

The idea with tengen (middle point) is that as a move by itself, it nets you zero points. If you play normally (in a corner) you have a much bigger chance to instantly get a few points (though of course... they can still be taken).

But that would only makes sense if every single thread needed mod approval, and I don't believe that is the case. You would still see the thread before it was banned.
